Good Examples

This poster has many values that make it up to be an affected poster design. One of these qualities is the font, as it is recognizable to the viewer who is familiar with this film. Not only is the font identifiable but also the information is concise and important. In addition to having familiarity with the font, the silhouette is of a notable character, which adds to the affect of the viewer being drawn to this visually. Finally, overall one of the main reasons for this being a good poster design is the color choice. Having red itself is flashy enough to grab the viewers attention but when put against a dark color such as black the contracting colors work to that advantage even more.

This poster promoting a music concert has details in it, which make it successful. The pattern, in which they chose to print the colors as well as the colors they chose, helps to draw our eye to the small spaces of negative space. This grabs the viewer’s attention quickly and works as almost a way to keep the viewer lured in. Because there is limited information it works as an advantage to get the message across quickly with only giving the most vital details for the event. The font type goes well with the rectangle squares of color on the poster and having the text white against a purple background makes it pop out and easy to read.

This poster promoting the musical Wicked is a great design to get people to stop and look at what is playing. The contrasting colors of black and white show clear distinction between good and evil but also work as a way to catch the viewer. This is further supported by showing part of the face of each character and making the one of them green that we as an audience generally associate with evil. The weight and size of the font work well with this poster because of the big solid background colors of the silhouettes. Furthermore the small creatures (flying monkeys), add a sense of depth and background to this poster.

Bad Examples

There are a number of reasons why this poster promoting a comedy show is unsuccessful. The first thing that stands out would be how the design that went into the font seems to be all over the place. There is no real consistency throughout in terms of font color nor. Moreover the information is not organized well and is difficult to pull out the important pieces. The background colors chosen are somewhat boring and would not grab the attention of a passer by. The size of all of the different text makes it difficult for someone to quickly read what they need to know and most people will not stop to take the extra time to read through a poster.

This poster for a Valentines ball has far too much going on for anyone to be able to pull out the information needed to even attend the event. There is so much text it feels like you are reading a book. All of the different colors, font, and size of the text will make someone keep walking and not take the time to find out more. The details around the edge of the poster crowd the page with all the text and there is almost no spacing between anything for the viewer to rest his/her eye. At the least the contact information should be clearly visible despite having lot of details to convey.

The design of this poster for a landscaping company is difficult to read and lacks a color scheme that would help make this pop to anyone passing by. The title is almost impossible to read with the font choice they picked and because of this there is no room for spacing or kerning. The colors they chose do not compliment each other and almost blend together making it hard to read especially from a distance. Also the way that they show their telephone numbers makes it confusing at first glance to know which number to call before realizing they are they same. In addition having a fax number for a landscaping business seems unnecessary and outdated.
